OKLAHOMA CITY – Once the extended spell of winter weather releases its hold on central Oklahoma, Remington Park will open the racing surface for training. Horses and horsemen will take to the track to begin preparation for the upcoming American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season that begins on March 7.

The racetrack was originally scheduled to open on Feb. 5 but the event was put on hold until at least Sunday, Feb. 9, due to the sub-freezing temperatures and continued winter precipitation. Remington Park and Oklahoma City received more snowfall this morning, before dawn.

When Remington Park opens the track for training, it will be the first activity over the surface since a between seasons renovation was completed. This was the second such revitalization for the track since the 2013 Quarter Horse Season was completed in June. The first was conducted last summer, prior to the beginning of the 2013 Thoroughbred Season in August. That procedure proved very effective.

In preparation for the upcoming Quarter Horse, Paint and Appaloosa season, several tons of organic material known as “red regrinds” have been evenly distributed around the track, then repeatedly tilled into the surface mixture.

“Our technical advisors and lab consultants suggested we slightly raise the organic content of the mixture in order to give the racing surface more stability with less stress on the horses,” said Scott Wells, Remington Park president and general manager. “The organic material also helps us maintain more moisture in the track, making it tighter and easier for the horses to get their best footing. That’s especially important as temperatures and springtime winds increase.”

Weather permitting, the first day of training is set for Feb. 9 with the initial day of training races slated for Wednesday, Feb. 12.

The 2014 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season at Remington Park begins March 7 and continues thru June 1. Normal first post time will be 6pm nightly.

Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the Grade 2 Oklahoma Futurity, to be run for the 73rd time on March 22, 2014.

Tracked by over 51,000 fans on Facebook and 5,000 Twitter followers, Remington Park is Oklahoma City’s only Racetrack & Casino and is located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District.
