Remington Park Thoroughbred Season Kicks Off August 15

OKLAHOMA CITY (July 29, 2014) – Remington Park officials have released the lineup for its Thoroughbred season, which kicks off Friday, Aug. 15 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 14. The 2014 Thoroughbred season features 67 race dates and a jockey and trainer who are both on watch to break records. This season, Remington Park will feature many special events celebrating the sport of horse racing, Remington’s accomplishments and Oklahoma’s culture.

Jockey and Trainer Nearing Records
Cliff Berry- Jockey
Jockey Cliff Berry of Jones, Oklahoma needs one more win at Remington Park to become the first jockey to achieve 2,000 Thoroughbred wins locally. Berry attended Stroud High School and in 1981 started his racing career. Berry has accumulated over 4,200 total Thoroughbred wins.
Donnie Von Hemel - Trainer
Trainer Donnie Von Hemel is just two wins away from his 2,000th all-time career Thoroughbred win. Von Hemel began his horse training career after completing college at Fort Hays State in Kansas where he earned a degree in accounting. Von Hemel comes from a family of horse trainers. Both his father Don, and his brother Kelly, are also horse trainers. Donnie Von Hemel resides in Piedmont, Oklahoma

Thoroughbred Season Events Schedule
Opening Weekend – Friday, Aug. 15 & Saturday, Aug. 16; first race 7 p.m.
Remington Park’s 18-week Thoroughbred season gets underway with live entertainment both nights, a neon-colored ball cap giveaway on Friday night to the first 1,500 patrons and a neon-colored t-shirt giveaway on Saturday night to the first 1,500 patrons.

Saturday, August 16; first race 7:00 p.m.
Stakes races with the $175,000 Governor’s Cup and the $75,000 David M. Vance Sprint as the featured events.

Thoroughbred Season- Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
o Wednesday is ‘Wear it Wednesday’- wear your neon-colored Remington Park t-shirt for a chance to win $20 towards a racing wager.
o Thursday is ‘Throwback Thoroughbred Thursday’- fill out one entry form and place it into the bin before race three for a chance to win a $100 cash prize during races 3-8.
o Friday is ‘Throwback Thoroughbred Friday’- fill out one entry form and place it into one of the bin for one of the top jockey’s before race three to win a $100 cash prize during races 3-8.

Labor Day- Monday, Sept. 1; first race 1:30 p.m.
Remington Park is paying you to play. Everyone that enters the Racing Entrance will receive a PayDay candy bar. Drawings will be held during races 3-8 for cash prizes and there will be food trucks on the north lawn.

Oklahoma Derby – Sunday, Sept. 28; first race 1:30p.m.
The Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby is the marquee racing event of the season. The Oklahoma Derby will feature a wine and craft beer tasting, party on the lawn, a regal hat contest and some of the richest purses of the season. The Oklahoma Derby has plenty of entertainment options to celebrate this annual event.
o Five Oklahoma wine vendors
o Five Oklahoma craft beer vendors
o Drawings for cash prizes
o Hat and bowtie contest from 2-4 p.m.
o Free carriage rides
o Live music
o Food trucks
