OKLAHOMA CITY – After a delay of eight consecutive days due to sub-freezing temperatures, Remington Park was finally able to open its racing surface this afternoon. Cartel Chica was the first to post an official workout in preparation of the upcoming 2014 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season.

Owned by the Ellen Kennedy Living Trust of Owasso, Okla. and trained by Luis Villafranco, jockey Ivan Carnero was aboard Cartel Chica. The 3-year-old filly worked 220 yards from the gate handily in :12.50 seconds over a fast track according to Remington Park clocker Vicky Grothaus.

Cartel Chica broke her maiden at Remington Park in her career debut in March 2012. She went on to place in consecutive Oklahoma-bred stakes races in her other local attempts. A daughter of Teller Cartel by the Feature Mr Jess mare Jess Because I Could has earned $31,358 from seven starts with one victory, a pair of seconds and one third-place run.

The Remington Park racetrack opened for training at 1pm. The event marked the end of eight straight days of inactivity due to sub-freezing temperatures and winter weather. Temperatures are forecast to reach the 50-degree and 60-degree marks many days in central Oklahoma, allowing horsemen and their athletes to get their important track training in as the season opener on March 7 approaches.

Remington Park will conduct training races on both Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15 at 11:30am. The training, or schooling, races allow horsemen to prepare their athletes that have yet to make their first career start. The training race offers a simulated experience to what the horse will actually encounter when they take part in their pari-mutuel racing debut.

The 2014 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season at Remington Park begins March 7 and continues thru June 1.

Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Remington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admission, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park, home of the Grade 2 Oklahoma Futurity, to be run for the 73rd time on March 22, 2014.

Tracked by over 51,000 fans on Facebook and 5,000 Twitter followers, Remington Park is Oklahoma City’s only Racetrack & Casino and is located at the junction of Interstates 35 & 44, in the heart of the Oklahoma City Adventure District.
